Role Summary


Reporting to the Vice President, Environment, the Director, Water Management will be responsible for strategic implementation and oversight of the corporate water management strategy and associated operational activities that occur in both water rich and water scarce jurisdictions. This individual will drive for steady and stable management of water to ensure business continuity while maintaining environmental compliance, supporting stakeholder obligations, and advancing continuous improvement activities to facilitate achievement of long-term objectives. 

This role is responsible for cross-functional collaboration at both the corporate and operational level to evaluate all risks associated with the management and treatment of water, and to identify and drive implementation of appropriate mitigations.  In addition to supporting ongoing operations, this individual will also collaborate with and support project development, expansions, tailings management, and due diligence activities, and ongoing long-term management of water in planning and implementation of closure activities. 

Job Description

  • Lead and improve the corporate governance framework for water management.
  • Lead lifecycle planning for critical water related projects, ranging from strategic planning initiatives through project planning, execution, monitoring, controlling and closure.
  • Direct the review and development of water balances, water management plans, water quality models, and other water models.
  • Provide subject matter expertise to exploration, projects, operations, and legacy properties, on various water treatment technologies, including membrane technologies and brine management, ARD management and treatment, passive treatment designs, or other water management approaches.
  • Review and advise on treatment paths and processes based on water discharge regulatory requirements and site-specific water chemistry.
  • Establish project charters for approved critical projects defining the goals, objectives, risks, assumptions, staffing levels, roles and responsibilities, milestones, and deliverables.
  • Work alongside processing/metallurgy teams to improve process water quality and efficiency.
  • Support tailings and mine closure planning governance activities.
  • Support due diligence process for future mine or project acquisitions.
  • Support operations with the implementation activities that help LMC meet its goals and targets for water, track progress and report to Senior Management.
  • Direct the water review process, lead the development of water guidance materials, and assist operations in applying LMC’s water policies, governance framework, and associated standards.
  • Remain current on the linkage between water and climate change adaptation, challenges and mitigation strategies/practices that may impact/benefit LMC. 
  • Identify internal and external best practices and emerging trends related to water and disseminate knowledge throughout LMC.
  • Support and develop a water community of practice and promote participation across LMC to share best practices.

Required Skills:

  • A commitment to the highest H&S, environmental and social performance standards.
  • Engineering or related technical field from an accredited institution, preferably with a P.Eng. or P.Geo. registration/licensure. 
  • Minimum 15 years working experience and recognized expertise in mine water management.
  • Specific experience in one or more fields of corporate water strategy development and implementation, hydrology, hydrogeology, environmental geochemistry, water treatment, mine water infrastructure design, water balances and water quality modelling, and/or mine water management planning and operations is required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to inspire, motivate and influence people and engage resources across different areas and levels of the organization.
  • Results-oriented with exceptional organizational and planning skills, strong attention to details, and with excellent oral, public presentation, and written communication skills.
  • A strong leader of operations, project and technical teams and a proven mentor and guide of emerging talent.
  • An ability to work with people of varying cultures and build relationships with other disciplines within and outside LMC.
  • Excellent English written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to review and edit reports and documentation.
  • Ability and willingness to travel internationally at least one week per month.
  • Experience with industry standard commercial computer software such as Microsoft Excel, Access, ArcGIS, and various geo-engineering software
